Looking Up at Lower South Falls

My youngest daughter and I went back to Silver Falls State Park on Sunday, hiking through high winds and heavy rains and loving every minute of it.

I took several sequences of photos of Lower South Falls, adjusting shutter speeds in order to try to freeze the wind-stirred leaves while also smoothing out the water. But when I got back home and looked at all my images, this single exposure was my favorite.

Perhaps you can’t see it well on a smaller screen, but the slow shutter speed—2 seconds, I believe—allows us to see through the water. A woman behind the falls is looking up, and she kept still long enough to stay pretty sharp. For me, that moment is worth having some extra motion in the leaves around the edges.
