I watched this female Red-winged Blackbird gather material to weave into a nest at the base of these cattails. I read today that, in the 1930s, a naturalist dismantled a Red-winged Blackbird nest and found it had been made by weaving together 34 strips of willow bark and 142 cattail leaves, some 2 feet long. Birds are amazing.
