Anna’s Hummingbird in the Garden

[Click image to view in a lightbox.]

Our house has spent a significant amount of time and money this year adding plants to the garden to attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. I’m pretty sure we cheered when we saw our first butterfly. Bees have been plentiful. I’ve only seen two hummingbirds at our flowers so far, though we get regular visitors to our feeders. I was so excited when I saw this Anna’s yesterday that I grabbed my camera and snapped a shot despite the harsh midday light. I’m also not a fan of how the wire fence of our chicken coop looks in the background. I’m hoping the bird comes back when the light is soft—at the start or end of the day, or when it is overcast—and when I can improve the background. But these creatures are little sparks of wildness; we can invite them, but not control them. So we’ll see.
